Today is the day! I am pleased to release my first Foundations Course art lesson on YouTube. I’m so happy you’ve decided to join me to learn some basic skills and concepts that will be used throughout your creative journey.

If you haven’t watched the Introduction videos yet, check them out. There are 4 parts: welcome, my most used materials and tools, a basic line drawing lesson, and a look into my “treasure” and “teacher” boxes. It’s a great place to start, but if you want to get right to the classes I completely understand.

My art lessons are designed to be completed in order, with about a week in between to give students time to practice their skills before moving on. Each Monday I’ll be releasing a new class on my YouTube channel, skipping some weeks for holidays. Each course, or Module, has a theme and our first one is the foundations of art.

The Foundations Course is made up of 6 lessons where we will explore techniques in line drawing, contour drawing, and texture. These basics will be the foundation for all of our classes and projects going forward (and some we’ve already done), so I believe spending time to learn and practice these skills is an important step toward confidence in your art.

This class, Line Drawing 1, is the start our Foundations course. It’s a lesson on the three basic types of lines: curved, straight, and angled. Miss Linda’s poster of these line types, seen in the lesson video can be viewed below and are available on the Supplemental Materials page.

From top to bottom: straight lines, curved lines, and angled lines.

The materials needed for this class are:

  • a pencil
  • some peeled crayons in different colors (what are those?)
  • a small stack of paper

Optional materials are:

  • an eraser
  • a pencil sharpener
  • a file folder or paperclip for organization

Practice, practice, practice!
